Already back in 2007 we got in contact with a number of dedicated sailors in the northern parts of North America that were designing and building advanced ice yachts capable of massive speeds on clear black ice. We got very interested as high speed sailing in all forms always have been our core. We partnered up with International Skeeter association and booked our flight tickets to get over there directly. When we saw the skeeters racing each other live for the first time, we were hooked.
This year we joined up with Sail Racing Test Team member and pro skeeter sailor Daniel Hearn in his hunt for solid black ice in the north territory of Minnesota.
The SR-77 Carbon Skeeter is designed by Ice Sailor Pat Heppert and is built in a combination of light local basswood covered and reinforced with carbon fiber for strength. The carbon rigging, sailplan and the apparent wind angles makes it very similar to sail to the F-50 catamarans used in the world’s most cutting-edge sail racing league, SailGP. Fully powered up and in racing mode this skeeter design can reach top speeds of over 150 km/h.
